Thandabantu is a semi-retired law academic, diplomat and author. In 1996 he was appointed by President Mandela as a full-time Commissioner on the South African Law Reform Commission. Between 2000 and 2004 he was Deputy South African Ambassador to the United States and Deputy Chief of Mission in Washington DC. Subsequently he was appointed by President Mbeki as Chair of the Commission on Traditional Leadership Disputes (The Nhlapo Commission) and in 2004 he was appointed Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town
Thandabantu holds degrees in BA (Law) UBLS, LL.B (Hons.) Glasgow University, DPhil (Law) Oxford University, as well as an honorary doctorate from Glasgow University.
Thandabantu has been a Special Advisor on Zulu Customs & Culture to ALIGRO since 2018.
